Not even Professor Xavier himself could have predicted the explosion of the X-gene upon the earth. As a teenager, Xavier knew of several other living mutants. By his twenties, he would have estimated as many as 1,000 spread across the entire earth. And now?
Uncountable.
Spreading across the earth, popping up exponentially, were more people like him. More mutants. More and more and more.
With this discovery, with the mutant tracking device Cerebro locating each and every new mutant, Professor X knew that the time had come to pull those who were willing to learn into his fold. He was ready to share his knowledge and teach these young mutants to use their gifts for the betterment of all of humanity. Thus, the first few students arrived at his New York mansion. Scott Summers, Jean Grey, and Warren Worthington first spent time at his mansion, learning all that he had to teach in regard to their burgeoning powers and also their talented minds. With time, Xavier's travels to Africa led him to Ororo Monroe, who joined his school next. Soon thereafter, Jamie Madrox and Lorna Dane joined the fold. A bit of time passed.
With the growing visibility of mutants to the public, the increased need for a safe haven became clear. A new group of older mutants flocked to Xavier's mansion, with more scheduled to arrive. More students, and more teachers. All would call this place "home."
Far from the growing Xavier mansion, another mutant resided with a different agenda. Convinved of mutant superiority, Magneto pulled his own group of mutants under his wing. Teaching them to rule, he prepared them for the day when they would take over and assume their right at the top of the evolutionary chain. He called them "The Brotherhood of Mutants."
